Top Counties with Most Women in SHA Enrollment

Kenya is experiencing substantial female enrollment under the Social Health Authority (SHA), with leading counties showing high registration numbers as the nation transitions from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). The 2026 Economic Survey indicates Nairobi City tops the list with 844,905 registered women, demonstrating both its substantial population and enhanced understanding of health insurance advantages. Kiambu ranks second with 442,033 registrations, followed by Nakuru which reported 387,976. Kakamega and Mombasa also demonstrated remarkable figures, showing expanding adoption beyond the metropolitan area. Additional counties among the top ten include Bungoma, Kisumu, Machakos, Homa Bay, and Kisii. The statistics represent registrations since SHA officially succeeded NHIF in October 2024. Analysts note that greater female participation is important because women frequently serve as key decision-makers in family healthcare matters and maternal health access.
