Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has expressed confidence that President William Ruto will secure a substantial victory in the 2027 general election, indicating the Kenya Kwanza administration aims for approximately 70 per cent of the national vote.
During an interview on Hot 96 FM on Monday, Mudavadi stated the government is focused on achieving a decisive electoral outcome that would reduce post-election disputes and enable the nation to progress without extended political tensions.
“I would say that we would be looking at 70 per cent of the vote,” Mudavadi mentioned during the discussion.
He explained that such a margin would promote political stability and enhance public confidence in the democratic process.
“A reasonable benchmark might be the threshold of a constitutional referendum, which was 67 per cent, and when you round it up it becomes 70 per cent,” he explained.
Mudavadi noted Kenya has experienced recurring cycles of contested presidential elections, frequently resulting in Supreme Court petitions and increased political divisions.
“When we approach the next elections, we need to obtain a free, fair democratic process so that we move forward,” he stated.
“We achieve a victory where the nation can advance and avoid the tension associated with contested outcomes. It is part of democracy, but if we can improve it and make it decisive, it would benefit the country.”
The prime cabinet secretary’s comments come as political mobilisation by leaders supporting Ruto intensifies with preparations for the 2027 contest taking shape.
On Sunday, Mudavadi had made similar remarks while speaking during prayers and a fundraiser for St Peter’s Cathedral in Kapsabet, Nandi county.
At the event, he expressed hope Ruto would secure such a commanding victory that no candidate would feel compelled to challenge the results at the Supreme Court.
“We must break the cycle of petitions, and just like the athletes in this region are breaking world records, we also want to work together to ensure President Ruto breaks the record that we shall not have a presidential petition,” Mudavadi stated.
He encouraged residents of the Rift Valley region to register as voters in large numbers and support the President in the next election.
Mudavadi’s statements also reflect sentiments previously expressed by President Ruto himself regarding the upcoming election.
In January this year, Ruto announced that he was targeting a landslide victory of between two and three million votes in 2027 to avoid the narrow margins that characterised the 2022 presidential race.
Speaking during a United Democratic Alliance National Governing Council meeting at State House, Nairobi, the President indicated that lessons from previous political disputes had informed the formation of the current broad-based government arrangement.
“The last election we won by a margin of 200,000 votes, but this coming election, we must win by a margin of two to three million so that we unite Kenya and move together,” Ruto said.
