President William Ruto transformed a diplomatic meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron into a lighthearted tribute to Kenya’s athletic superiority on Monday, following his playful jab at Macron about his race with marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge.
The amusing exchange took place during a joint appearance at the University of Nairobi, eliciting laughter and applause from those present.
Ruto remarked, “Today, Macron engaged in a competition with Eliud Kipchoge,” to which Macron promptly interjected with a smile, “I lost.”
Rutilizing the opportunity, Ruto proudly promoted Kenya as the worldwide center of athletic excellence, humorously suggesting that nations seeking sporting achievement know precisely where to look.
Ruto stated, “If you seek relay success, head to Botswana. For quality football, make your way to Senegal. But if you desire truly exceptional, world-class athletics, this is the destination,” as the crowd burst into laughter.
The President characterized Kenya as the cradle of sporting history, highlighting the nation’s worldwide supremacy in long-distance running and alluding to the groundbreaking sub-two-hour marathon milestone linked to Kenyan athletics.
He declared, “This is where history unfolds. This is where the first human being ever completed a marathon in under two hours.”
Ruto also commended Sebastian Sawe, noting that his ascent from modest origins to international acclaim exemplified the strength of Kenyan talent.
The President remarked, “We take great pride. I’m referring to an individual who attended an obscure primary school yet has made history.”
Beyond the levity, Ruto indicated that sports had developed into a significant economic and diplomatic instrument, generating employment and enhancing tourism and cultural exchange.
He stated, “Today, sports constitute an industry. They represent culture, diplomacy, tourism, and employment.”
Earlier that morning, Macron exchanged formal summit proceedings for running attire, joining Kipchoge for a jog through Nairobi.
The French head of state, visiting Kenya for the Africa Forward Summit 2026, was observed running alongside the two-time Olympic champion in a casual session that rapidly gained online attention.
Macron donned a navy blue track shirt featuring a prominent white stripe on the sleeves, black shorts, and blue running shoes, whereas Kipchoge maintained his composure in identical athletic wear as the conversed and maintained their rhythm along Nairobi’s streets.
They were accompanied by a contingent of runners and what seemed to be presidential security personnel.
The extraordinary spectacle of a current French president running alongside one of Kenya’s finest athletic champions provided a refreshing diversion from the packed agenda of the Africa Forward Summit 2026, which has assembled numerous heads of state, investors, and policymakers in Nairobi.
