Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has suggested the creation of a new political organization under the ‘Linda Mwananchi’ movement, indicating a possible transformation in Kenya’s political environment leading up to future elections.
During a recent interview, Babu disclosed that Kenyans can anticipate a new political party with an updated image and leadership approach.
The legislator, previously aligned with the Orange Democratic Movement, seemed to dissociate from the party, asserting it no longer represents its foundational principles.
“ODM does not exist. What we have now is a lemon; not an orange anymore. It is LDM.”
Babu also affirmed his plans to contest for the Nairobi governor position, clarifying that he will run through a political party rather than as an independent candidate.
“I will be contesting for the Nairobi governor seat, and I will not run as an independent candidate.”
Although emphasizing that his current priority is Nairobi politics, Babu suggested wider national objectives under the Linda Mwananchi initiative.
“The voice of the people is the voice of God.”
When questioned if popular sentiment might propel him toward a presidential campaign, he answered cautiously but remained non-committal.
“Currently, my focus is on Nairobi. But by 2032, I will be the president.”
He elaborated on what seems to be a long-term political transition strategy within the movement.
“Whoever we select under Linda Mwananchi will serve one term, then pave the way for me to serve two terms.”
In a remark that may ignite political discussion, Babu alluded to his previous association with opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga while positioning himself as a future leader.
“My last boss was Raila Amollo Odinga. The next step is to be the boss, the one who will serve the people.” He stressed that work is already in progress to nominate a presidential candidate under the new movement, someone who would lead before his expected candidacy.
