Martha Karua, presidential aspirant and leader of the People’s Liberation Party, has urged Kenyans to follow the example of the late Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, whom she described as a true Kenyan patriot, an exemplary legal professional, and a lifelong advocate for justice dedicated to constitutionalism and human rights.
At the official renaming ceremony of Galana Road in Kilimani, Nairobi, Karua called the event a significant national moment honoring constitutionalism, justice, and an exceptional Kenyan who played a pivotal role in the country’s democratic struggle. As a mentee and close friend of Nowrojee, Karua joined his family, including CJ Emeritus Willy Mutunga and other human rights defenders, to pay tribute to the late legal figure.
Today, by naming this road in his honor, we do more than commemorate his life; we inscribe his legacy into the nation’s everyday journey. May all who travel this road be reminded of his courage, intellect, humanity, and unwavering commitment to justice. Pheroze was a calm yet firm and towering voice for justice.
Pheroze was not just a lawyer; he was a conscience, a seasoned advocate distinguished as Senior Counsel. He embodied the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and courage. For him, the practice of law was never about personal gain. It was never measured in fees earned, but in justice served.
Karua highlighted that during some of Kenya’s most challenging political periods, SC Nowrojee remained steadfast in defending human rights and constitutional order, providing legal protection to those persecuted for speaking out against injustice.
But Pheroze understood that justice was not merely about the law. It encompassed the totality of our lives. He served as an advisor and challenged political leaders to govern with integrity, mindful of the people’s interests and needs.
He stood firm when it was dangerous to do so, defending those who dared to speak, organize, and demand a democratic Kenya. When the Constitution was under threat, he used the law as a shield for the vulnerable and a check on power. As Kenyans traverse this road, may they remember a man who dedicated his time, talent, and courage to making this country freer, fairer, and more just.
Karua, herself an active participant in Kenya’s second liberation, emphasized that the late Senior Counsel was a firm believer in the rule of law and constitutionalism as essential for building a nation that serves all citizens, regardless of circumstance.
Karua stressed that the road naming is not merely an act of remembrance but a living testament to the values guiding Kenya today, particularly as the country faces ongoing injustice and pressure on constitutional principles. She noted that honoring patriotic Kenyans helps younger generations understand and actively participate in the nation’s democratic journey.
For future generations, they will ask, as we once did: who was Argwings Kodhek? I was compelled to learn our history and understand the legacy of great leaders who came before us. Similarly, we are immortalizing Pheroze Nowrojee’s legacy so that those who follow may learn of his courage, integrity, dedication to justice, and patriotism, and be inspired by his example. Pheroze embodied the values and principles of governance in Article 10 of our Constitution. His is a name worth knowing.
Karua, who also attended his 2025 memorial service in Washington, D.C., honored SC Nowrojee’s work in establishing a lasting legacy of leadership through mentorship, noting that his influence continues to shape Kenya’s legal and governance landscape.
Beyond the courtroom, he built a legacy through people, quietly shaping minds, nurturing integrity, and raising generations who would continue the struggle for justice. I was honored to have been mentored by him, and I will follow his wise words and steadfast example. His life teaches us that true leadership lies not only in what we achieve, but in who we empower to rise after us.
The 2027 presidential hopeful concluded by urging Kenyans, particularly legal professionals, to honor Nowrojee’s legacy by upholding constitutionalism, defending justice, and maintaining integrity in their daily lives.
