KNH Shifts to Digital System After 125 Years

Kenyatta National Hospital has completed the transition from manual, paper-based processes to a comprehensive digital platform across all operational areas, representing a significant transformation in the hospital’s 125-year history.

According to a press statement released on May 3, 2026, Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Richard Lesiyampe explained that the initiative intends to modernize service delivery and bring the facility in line with contemporary healthcare standards.

Dr. Lesiyampe further noted that the new platform, named Afya Apex, was developed and customized internally by the hospital’s clinical and technical teams to accommodate both medical and administrative requirements.

The hospital acknowledged that its operations depended on paper-based methods for decades, which are now viewed as obsolete and unsuitable for contemporary healthcare needs. While previous digitization efforts since 2012 did not succeed, officials stated that the current implementation incorporates lessons from those attempts and marks a definitive move toward automation and integration.

According to the announcement, the transition commenced on April 15 and is scheduled to be fully implemented within 90 days. In the initial phase, the hospital encountered difficulties, especially with discharge procedures, though officials confirmed these have been addressed. They maintained that the system has remained functional throughout the process and is stabilizing with ongoing implementation.

The hospital also recognized delays in services including patient clearance and billing during the early rollout stages and apologized for any inconvenience caused. However, they emphasized that patient care and safety remained the top priority throughout the transition phase.

Upon full implementation, the hospital anticipates that the digital system will enhance efficiency, increase transparency, and facilitate the provision of superior healthcare services on par with other digitized healthcare facilities across Africa.

Hospital management has requested patients and stakeholders to support the transition, indicating that their cooperation will be essential for the success of the new platform.
