President William Ruto has urged Kenya’s creative industry to strive for international prominence, stating the nation possesses the capability to eclipse Afrocinema with appropriate backing and organizational framework. During the Kenya National Drama Festival State Concert at State House, Ruto observed that the performances he witnessed displayed exceptional quality that could rival global standards. “The scripts I’ve reviewed and the performances I’ve seen are of international calibresurpassing Afrocinema. I believe we can elevate this to greater heights,” he stated. Drawing comparisons to Kenya’s worldwide achievements in athletics, the president voiced optimism that the country could attain equivalent recognition in the arts. “We excel as a sporting powerhouse across multiple disciplines. I am confident we also have what it takes to become a leading artistic force globally,” he said. “With the right framework, our artists and performers will achieve international acclaim.” Ruto disclosed that governmental backing for the creative domain will now be institutionalized, with consistent funding channeled through the education sector. “This will now be incorporated as a budget allocation in the Education Ministry to ensure reliable funding,” he announced. He also advocated for reallocating resources, suggesting that a segment of advertising expenditure should be directed toward developing artistic talent. “If we invest in advertising, we must allocate resources toward drama and music festivals and branding initiatives where young talents develop and inspire each other,” he remarked, noting that accountability mechanisms would be implemented through performance agreements and periodic evaluations. The head of state commended storytelling’s role in defining Kenya’s national character, highlighting recent events that revealed the nation’s rich cultural heritage. “Over the past 12 days, we have experienced an extraordinary celebration of culture and the boundless possibilities of our nation. Storytelling has consistently been central to our dynamic identity,” he said. He pointed out that the creative sector is rapidly transforming, propelled by young innovators merging artistic expression with technological advancement. “Currently, a new wave of creators is harnessing creativity and technology to preserve our cultural essence. More importantly, drama is acquiring fresh significanceartistic creation is no longer merely a pastime, but among the swiftest-expanding segments of our economy,” Ruto explained. To bolster the industry, the president indicated that authorities would seek specialized knowledge to advance policies and expand the creative economy. “We will engage experts to collaborate with the government in ensuring the creative sector receives proper focus and development,” he said. Ruto further disclosed his intention to participate in the upcoming Kalasha International Film and TV Awards, demonstrating sustained governmental commitment to the creative field. “Next month, I will be present with creative professionals at the Kalasha Awards.
