Autopsy Confirms Spinal Cord and Brain Damage from Fatal Rally Shooting

Government pathologists determined Vincent Ayomo died from a gunshot wound during a February 15 political rally in Kitengela. The 28-year-old victim suffered a bullet entering through his left eye that fractured his spinal cord, damaged his brain, and exited through his skull.

The postmortem conducted Thursday confirmed these injuries caused Ayomo’s death. As a mechanic and father, Ayomo was reportedly returning from work when the incident occurred during the gathering.

Eyewitnesses maintained Ayomo was struck while walking peacefully. Their accounts described heavy rain during the event and noted police used teargas during crowd dispersal operations.

Orange Democratic Movement leader Edwin Sifuna confirmed the death on February 16, accusing police of firing live ammunition during the rally. He condemned presidential administration violence and pledged justice for Ayomo’s family while noting multiple rally injuries.

Numerous opposition figures attended the gathering, including MPs Babu Owino and Caleb Amisi, Governors James Orengo, Richard Onyonka, and Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority launched an urgent investigation, deploying a rapid response team to Kajiado County. IPOA’s Ann Circles Mwangi expressed concern over casualties.

Contrary statements emerged from Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who alleged outsiders transported from Machakos County incited chaos. Murkomen defended police response, citing lack of prior notification about the rally that hampered crowd control efforts.
