Nairobi Schools Hit by Teachers’ Strike Over Pay Disputes

NAIROBI, Kenya – Form Four students across the country faced disruption in their national examinations as teachers continued their nationwide strike, defying a court order to return to classrooms. The industrial action affected schools including St. Teresa’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi, where students were sent home amid uncertainty over exam schedules.

The strike, which has been ongoing for several days, stems from unresolved disputes between the teachers’ unions and the government over pay, allowances, and working conditions. Students and parents expressed frustration at the interruption, noting the critical timing of the strike for final-year secondary school pupils preparing for national exams.

Education authorities have urged striking teachers to resume work immediately, emphasizing the negative impact on students’ academic progress and future opportunities. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to reschedule the disrupted examinations, though officials warn that delays may affect the national exam calendar.

Parents and school administrators called for urgent dialogue between the government and teachers’ unions, stressing that students should not bear the brunt of industrial disputes. The Ministry of Education confirmed that contingency plans are being developed to ensure that all Form Four candidates complete their exams without further disruption.
