Garissa Governor Ali Bunow to Face Senate Over Sh105 Million Misappropriation

Garissa, April 5, 2018 – Governor Ali Bunow Korane of Garissa County is set to appear before the Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee to answer allegations of misappropriating over Sh105 million in county funds. The Senate, acting on recommendations from the Auditor General, has summoned 14 county governors this year to defend their expenditures, with Garissa’s Governor among those flagged for irregular spending on various projects.

The Auditor General’s report highlighted multiple irregularities in Garissa County’s spending. Sh67 million allocated for relief food could not be accounted for, including the source of the supplies and the beneficiaries. An additional Sh1.3 million was reportedly used to increase payments to eight county officials without justification. Other contentious expenditures include Sh1.8 million paid as allowances to the public attending civic participation forums—payments that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission considers inappropriate—and Sh8.9 million spent on incomplete street beautification works, a section of which became a public dumpsite. The county also irregularly spent Sh5 million on a coffee mill that had not been properly procured, while Sh21 million was flagged as questionable mileage claims by Members of the County Assembly.
