Nairobi to Expand Non-Motorised Transport Corridors with Sh1.47 Billion Plan
The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) is set to invest Sh1.47 billion to expand non-motorised transport (NMT) corridors across the city, aiming to enhance walking spaces, improve road safety, and reduce congestion.
The initiative, part of the Nairobi Urban Mobility Plan, will construct dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, distinguished by grey lanes for walking and red lanes for cycling. The total project will cover 116 km in three phases, spreading from the Central Business District (CBD) to Eastlands, Westlands, Ngong Road, and other key areas.
Phase One focuses on 36 km, covering areas such as Kenyatta Avenue, Wabera Street, and Muindi Mbingu Streets, with extensions into Hurlingham, Jogoo Road, and Westlands. Key corridors will also include bicycle parking at Kenya Railways Station.
Phase Two will extend 55 km, connecting the CBD to Westlands, Ngong Road, Kibera, Industrial Area, and Kilimani, with investments totaling over Sh850 million.
Phase Three will complete the network, linking the CBD to Lang’ata and Roysambu, ensuring seamless pedestrian and cyclist access throughout the city.
NMS Director-General Mohamed Badi emphasized the project’s dual goals: enhancing safety for non-motorised road users and contributing to decongestion in Nairobi. The non-motorised transport corridors will not only offer safety to pedestrians and cyclists but also encourage Nairobi residents to adopt cycling and walking as viable transport options, he said.
The NMT project is being implemented in collaboration with other road agencies, including NaMATA, and forms a cornerstone of Nairobi’s broader push toward sustainable, inclusive urban mobility.
