Turkana Tourism on the Rise as Hidden Attractions Gain Spotlight

Turkana County, Kenya – March 8, 2023

Turkana County, widely known as the cradle of mankind, is attracting increasing attention from both local and international tourists as its little-known natural and cultural attractions continue to gain recognition. The region, located about 700 kilometres north of Nairobi, has long been associated with drought and hardship, but emerging travel trends are highlighting the county’s remarkable beauty and tourism potential.

From pristine beaches along Lake Turkana to unique geological features and cultural landmarks, the county is positioning itself as one of Kenya’s most intriguing travel frontiers.

Lake Turkana: The Desert Jewel

Formerly known as Lake Rudolf, Lake Turkana remains the largest desert lake in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering more than 6,400 square kilometres, the vast turquoise lake is home to more than 40 species of fish, thousands of crocodiles, and stunning cliffside views that draw wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Eliye Beach: Turkana’s Desert Paradise

Eliye Beach, with its white sands and palm-lined shoreline, has emerged as a serene escape resembling a tropical island. Travellers visiting the beach enjoy photography, relaxation, nature walks, and unmatched sunset views over the shimmering waters of Lake Turkana.

Central Island: A Volcanic Wonder

Tourists seeking adventure often take a 40-minute boat ride to Central Island National Park, a volcanic island featuring three crater lakes—Crocodile Lake, Flamingo Lake, and Tilapia Lake. Although boat rides cost between Sh15,000 and Sh18,000, visitors say the spectacular hilly terrain and rare wildlife make the trip worthwhile.

Christ the Redeemer Statue: Lodwar’s Sky-High Landmark

One of Turkana’s most iconic man-made attractions is the towering Christ the Redeemer statue, a grey sculpture positioned on a hill overlooking Lodwar town. Modelled after the world-famous statue in Rio de Janeiro, it offers panoramic views stretching from the airstrip to the rugged ranges surrounding the town.

A Growing Hub With Modern Amenities

Lodwar town has seen steady growth in amenities, including supermarkets, restaurants, lodging facilities, and banks. Visitors are also encouraged to sample Turkana’s renowned traditional barbecue, which has become a favourite among adventurous food lovers.

With its mix of natural beauty, culture, and emerging tourism infrastructure, Turkana County is steadily shedding its reputation as a hardship zone and revealing itself as one of Kenya’s most captivating hidden gems.
