Kenya’s Open and Sustainable Climate Solutions (KE0032) commitment, part of its 2023–2027 OGP Action Plan, aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience efforts. The initiative is led by the Office of the Climate Envoy and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, with support from a range of government agencies, civil society, and international partners. It seeks to address Kenya’s pressing climate challenges, including extreme weather events, agricultural losses, indoor air pollution from biomass fuels, deforestation, and limited access to clean energy, all of which disproportionately affect women, children, and vulnerable communities.
The commitment proposes multi-stakeholder collaboration to foster inclusive climate action. Key milestones include establishing a Climate Action Working Group, designing a transparent tracking system for community payments linked to carbon credit projects, developing a platform to monitor afforestation initiatives in Kenya’s Water Towers region, and tracking the accessibility and impact of clean cooking technologies. Additionally, the plan emphasizes operationalizing open data platforms for early warning systems, integrating indigenous knowledge with modern technologies to provide real-time climate information to communities. These initiatives aim to empower citizens to participate actively in policymaking, ensure equitable resource distribution, and improve monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
By promoting transparency in climate finance, supporting a just energy transition, and enhancing public engagement in climate solutions, the KE0032 commitment seeks to build trust, strengthen local capacities, and enable communities to take ownership of climate action. It aligns with Kenya’s broader climate policy framework, including the Climate Change Act (2016, amended 2023) and the National Climate Change Action Plan III (2023–2027), supporting the country’s goals of afforestation, carbon reduction, and sustainable energy adoption. Through inclusive, participatory, and transparent approaches, Kenya aims to strengthen resilience, mitigate emissions, and ensure that climate solutions deliver tangible benefits for both communities and ecosystems.
