Kenya’s fish production hit 210,000 metric tonnes in 2023—up 25%—driven by cage aquaculture in Lake Victoria. Over 10,000 cages, mostly in Homa Bay and Migori, produce tilapia and catfish for local and Ugandan markets. The Ministry of Fisheries reports Ksh15 billion in earnings and 50,000 new jobs. Training and feed subsidies boosted yields, while solar-powered ice plants reduced post-harvest losses. Challenges include water pollution and feed costs. A new Ksh3 billion fish processing plant in Kisumu will add value through filleting and smoking, targeting EU exports by 2025.
