Kenya’s Tobacco Farmers Shift to High-Value Legumes Under Diversification Plan

by KenyaPolls

Over 15,000 tobacco farmers in Migori and Homabay have transitioned to growing soybeans, groundnuts, and pigeon peas under a government diversification program. The Ministry of Agriculture, with support from FAO, provides seeds, training, and guaranteed offtake by East African Foods and Twiga. Farmers report 40% higher income from legumes, which also improve soil fertility. Tobacco production has declined by 25% since 2022, reducing health and environmental costs. The program aims to convert 50,000 farmers by 2026. Export potential for organic legumes in EU and Middle East markets is being explored.
