Kenya’s Railway Freight Revenue Hits Ksh18 Billion in 2023 on SGR Efficiency

by KenyaPolls

Kenya Railways reported Ksh18 billion in freight revenue in 2023—a 28% increase—driven by Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) efficiency. The Nairobi–Mombasa line moved 7.2 million tonnes of cargo, including containers, cement, and grain. Average transit time dropped to 7 hours, down from 24 by road. New clients include Bamburi Cement, Twiga Foods, and Maersk. The SGR also reduced road maintenance costs by Ksh4 billion. Phase 2 to Naivasha handled 1.5 million tonnes. Plans to extend to Kisumu and Malaba are under feasibility review, with EAC partners committing to joint funding by 2025.
