Kenya’s SGR Freight to Uganda Grows to 2.5 Million Tonnes in 2023

by KenyaPolls

Kenya Railways reports that SGR freight volume to Uganda reached 2.5 million tonnes in 2023—a 50% year-on-year increase—thanks to efficiency gains and expanded terminal capacity. The Nairobi–Malaba corridor moved cement, sugar, machinery, and grain, reducing transit time from 3 days to 12 hours. Uganda Railway Corporation data shows 75% of Kampala-bound imports now use SGR. Revenue from cross-border freight hit Ksh11 billion. Kenya Railways is upgrading the Malaba dry port and plans a joint Uganda-Kenya logistics hub by 2025. The growth underscores SGR’s role in EAC integration and decongesting the Northern Corridor.
