Kenya’s Fisheries Data Platform Boosts Stock Management

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has launched a National Fisheries Data Platform that uses sensors, vessel tracking, and community reporting to monitor fish stocks in real time. The system, piloted in Lake Victoria and the Indian Ocean, provides early warnings on overfishing and illegal nets. Fishers receive SMS alerts on breeding seasons and closed zones. The platform has helped increase tilapia yields by 18% in pilot areas. Managed by the Fisheries Department and World Bank, it supports science-based quotas and sustainable livelihoods for 500,000 fisherfolk. The data will inform Kenya’s Blue Economy Strategy and marine protected area expansion by 2026.
