Kenya’s electricity generation from renewable sources has reached 93%—among the highest globally—thanks to geothermal expansion and stable hydropower. The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) added 105MW from Menengai and Olkaria VI in 2023, bringing total geothermal capacity to 1,000MW. Kenya Power reports that wind (310MW from Lake Turkana) and solar (100MW) contribute the rest, with thermal backup used only during extreme droughts. The Ministry of Energy aims for 100% renewables by 2030. Low and stable electricity prices (Ksh12/kWh for industries) are attracting data centers and green manufacturers to Konza Technopolis.
