Kenya’s Export of Processed Tea Grows by 33% in 2023

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s export of value-added tea—such as flavored, decaffeinated, and ready-to-drink variants—grew by 33% in 2023, earning Ksh18 billion. The Tea Board of Kenya reported strong demand from the U.S., Germany, and UAE for premium products. Over 20 factories, including Kericho Gold and Karirana, have invested in packaging and blending lines. The shift supports the government’s Tea 2030 plan to move up the value chain. Smallholders benefit through out-grower schemes and better pricing. Challenges include high certification costs and competition from India and Sri Lanka. With AfCFTA, Kenya aims to double processed tea exports by 2026.
