Kenya has amended its Fisheries Act to strengthen penalties for illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Signed into law in February 2024, the amendments impose fines up to Ksh10 million and vessel confiscation. The move follows a 40% decline in IUU incidents due to drone surveillance and community patrols. The Fisheries Department will deploy 10 new patrol boats in Lake Victoria and the Indian Ocean. The law also empowers Beach Management Units to issue licenses and resolve disputes. Sustainable practices like cage culture and tilapia breeding are promoted. The reforms aim to protect marine ecosystems while securing livelihoods for 500,000 fisherfolk.
