Kenya and Rwanda Ink Bilateral Trade Deal to Boost Cross-Border EAC Integration

by KenyaPolls

Kenya and Rwanda have signed a bilateral trade facilitation agreement to fast-track movement of goods, resolving long-standing non-tariff barriers. Signed in February 2024 during President Ruto’s Kigali visit, the deal introduces mutual recognition of standards, simplified customs clearance, and joint border post upgrades at Gatuna. The pact is expected to boost bilateral trade—currently at Ksh42 billion annually—by up to 30%. Key Kenyan exports include cement, pharmaceuticals, and packaged foods, while Rwanda supplies minerals and processed dairy. The agreement serves as a model for deeper EAC integration amid regional tensions. Private sector leaders welcomed the move, citing reduced clearance times from 72 to under 6 hours. Implementation begins July 2024, with joint monitoring committees in place.
