Kenya’s Creative Economy Exports Hit $150 Million in 2023

Kenya’s creative sector—film, music, fashion, and design—generated $150 million in exports in 2023, up from $90 million in 2021. Film production ( Riverwood ) led with $60 million, followed by music streaming ($40M) and fashion ($50M). Hits like Kati Kati and Rafiki boosted international sales. The Kenya Film Commission reported 150 local productions. Challenges include piracy and limited financing. The government’s Ksh5 billion Creatives Fund, launched in Q1 2024, offers grants and equipment leasing. With AfCFTA, Kenya aims to become East Africa’s content hub, targeting $500 million in exports by 2030.
