Local steel production rose by 18% in 2023 as Devki Steel and Bamburi Steel captured market share from imports. The Kenya Association of Manufacturers reports steel imports fell by 22%, saving Ksh15 billion in forex. The shift follows the 2022 safeguard duty on imported steel and increased infrastructure spending under BETA. Devki’s new Ksh12 billion rolling mill in Ruiru now supplies 40% of national demand. However, high energy costs and raw material dependence on scrap metal remain challenges. The sector employs 25,000 people and is projected to grow by 12% in 2024.
