Kenya’s Dairy Cooperatives Adopt Blockchain for Milk Payments

by KenyaPolls

Over 50 dairy cooperatives in Kenya, including Githunguri and New Kenya, have adopted blockchain to track milk deliveries and ensure timely farmer payments. The system, developed by Twiga Foods and IBM, records volume, quality, and payments in real time via mobile. Farmers receive funds within 24 hours, up from 14 days previously. Leakage and fraud have dropped by 30%. The pilot, covering 200,000 farmers, will expand nationwide in 2024. The initiative supports the Dairy Revitalization Strategy and boosts trust in the Ksh100 billion sector that employs 1.8 million Kenyans.
