Kenya’s Dairy Cooperatives Adopt AI for Milk Quality and Payment Optimization

by KenyaPolls

Over 100 dairy cooperatives in Kenya, including Githunguri and New Kenya, have adopted AI-powered platforms to assess milk quality and optimize payments in real time. The system, developed by Twiga Foods and IBM, uses sensors at collection points to measure fat, protein, and adulteration. Farmers receive instant SMS payouts based on quality, with premiums for high-grade milk. Leakage and fraud have dropped by 35%. The pilot, covering 300,000 farmers, will expand nationwide in 2024. The initiative supports the Dairy Revitalization Strategy and boosts trust in the Ksh120 billion sector that employs 2 million Kenyans.
