In a landmark move for player welfare, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has mandated the use of instrumented mouthguards for all players in the top-tier Kenya Cup. The devices, developed by a New Zealand-based firm, contain sensors that measure the force and location of head impacts in real-time. Data is instantly relayed to medical staff on the sidelines, allowing for immediate assessment of potential concussions. KRU Medical Director Dr. David Mwangi said, This objective data removes guesswork. We can now make safer, faster decisions about a player’s fitness to continue. The initiative, partly funded by World Rugby, positions Kenya as a pioneer in adopting this safety technology on the African continent.
