Kenya’s Digital Maternity Wallet Reaches 1 Million Mothers

by KenyaPolls

The Ministry of Health’s Digital Maternity Wallet has enrolled 1 million pregnant women since its 2023 rollout, providing cash transfers for antenatal care and delivery. Funded through the Social Health Authority, the platform uses USSD and biometric verification to disburse Ksh3,000 per trimester. Over 90% of beneficiaries report improved access to skilled birth attendants. The system integrates with NHIF and reduces maternal mortality, now at 342 per 100,000 live births (down from 510 in 2019). Expansions include nutrition supplements and postnatal support. The World Health Organization has recommended the model for scale-up across Africa.
