Kenya’s Tea Board Introduces Blockchain Traceability for All Export Parcels

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s Tea Board has mandated blockchain traceability for all export tea parcels starting April 2024. The system, developed with IBM and Twiga Foods, records farm origin, processing date, quality grade, and auction price on a secure ledger. Buyers in the EU, UK, and Pakistan can scan QR codes to verify sustainability claims. Over 500 factories and 500,000 smallholders are on the platform, reducing fraud and enabling premium pricing. Early data shows a 20% increase in payouts to farmers for traceable lots. The move strengthens Kenya’s clean and premium tea brand in competitive global markets.
