In a sign of esports’ growing commercial appeal, Safaricom’s M-Pesa has signed a one-year sponsorship deal with the Kenyan esports outfit Wanachi Warriors. The deal, worth an estimated KSh 15 million, will cover player salaries, training facilities, and travel for international tournaments. The Warriors compete in global titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and PUBG Mobile. This partnership validates esports as a mainstream sport. We are investing in the digital talent and passion of Kenya’s youth, said an M-Pesa spokesperson. The team will be rebranded as M-Pesa Wanachi Warriors, marking a significant shift from traditional sports sponsorships in the country.
