Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo have signed a strategic minerals agreement to supply cobalt and copper from DRC to Kenyan battery assembly plants. The deal, finalized in April 2024, supports Kenya’s electric mobility and renewable energy storage ambitions. Raw materials will be processed in a new special economic zone in Athi River. The partnership includes skills transfer and environmental safeguards. Kenya aims to become an East African battery hub, reducing reliance on Chinese imports. The first shipments arrive in Q3 2024.
