Kenya’s Urban Transport Fund Launches BRT Systems in 5 Cities

by KenyaPolls

The National Government has activated the Ksh50 billion Urban Transport Fund to roll out Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret. The World Bank-funded program, launched in May 2024, includes dedicated lanes, smart cards, and electric buses. Nairobi’s Phase 1 (Ngong Road corridor) begins construction in Q3 2024. The goal is to move 1 million commuters daily by 2027, cutting travel time by 50% and emissions by 30%. The fund also supports non-motorized transport like cycling lanes and pedestrian walkways, aligning with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
