Kenya has unveiled its first National E-Mobility Strategy, targeting 5% electric vehicle (EV) adoption by 2030 to reduce its $4 billion annual fuel import bill. The plan, launched in May 2024 by the Energy Ministry, includes tax exemptions on EVs, charging infrastructure rollout in Nairobi and Mombasa, and incentives for local assembly. BasiGo and Roam—local EV startups—will lead bus and boda-boda electrification pilots. Kenya Power will install 500 public charging points by 2026. The strategy aligns with Vision 2030 and aims to cut transport emissions by 30%. Challenges remain, including high EV costs and grid capacity, but falling battery prices and green financing from development partners offer hope. The move could create 10,000 green jobs and position Kenya as an East African EV hub.
