Kenya Achieves 100% Renewable Electricity Grid for First Time in History

by KenyaPolls

In a historic milestone, Kenya’s national grid ran on 100% renewable energy for over 72 consecutive hours in May 2024, powered by geothermal (47%), hydro (32%), wind (18%), and solar (3%). The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) confirmed the achievement during a period of high rainfall and stable geothermal output. Kenya Power noted zero reliance on thermal backups, saving Ksh1.2 billion in fuel costs. The feat underscores Kenya’s leadership in clean energy, with 92% of annual generation already renewable. The government aims to maintain 95–100% renewable supply by 2030 through Menengai geothermal and Lake Turkana wind expansions.
