Kenya Launches National E-Mobility Charging Standard to Unify EV Infrastructure

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has adopted its first national standard for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, mandating Type 2 and CCS2 connectors for all public chargers. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) gazetted the standard in May 2024 to ensure interoperability across brands like Roam, BasiGo, and BYD. The move prevents consumer lock-in and supports mass EV adoption. All new charging stations must comply by January 2025. Kenya has 100 public chargers today and aims for 500 by 2027. The standard aligns with global best practices and positions Kenya as a regional EV policy leader, supporting its goal of 5% EV adoption by 2030.
