Kenya’s Renewable Energy Auction Attracts 1.2GW of Bids

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s first competitive auction for renewable energy attracted 1.2GW of bids for just 500MW on offer, signaling strong investor interest. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) received proposals from 28 firms for solar, wind, and geothermal projects. Winners will sign 20-year PPAs at an average tariff of Ksh6.80/kWh—20% below current thermal costs. Projects will be built in Garissa, Meru, and Baringo, creating 5,000 jobs. The auction supports Kenya’s goal of 100% green energy by 2030 and lowers electricity prices for consumers and industries. Commercial operation begins in 2026.
