Maize Production Rises as Government’s Fertilizer Subsidy Reaches 2 Million Farmers

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s maize output is projected to hit 54 million bags in 2024—up 22% from 2023—following the successful rollout of the National Fertilizer Subsidy Programme. The Ministry of Agriculture reports that 2.1 million smallholders received subsidized DAP and NPK fertilizers at Ksh3,500 per 50kg bag (less than half market price). Key growing regions like Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, and Bungoma are harvesting bumper crops, pushing wholesale prices to Ksh3,200 per bag. The program, costing Ksh15 billion, aims to achieve maize self-sufficiency and stabilize food prices. Challenges include last-mile distribution and counterfeit inputs, but mobile verification has reduced leakages. The national strategic reserve is being replenished to 4 million bags.
