Kenya’s First Green Bond Listed on Nairobi Securities Exchange

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s inaugural green bond—the Ksh25 billion sovereign issue—has been listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), opening trading to retail investors. The listing, effective June 2024, allows individuals to buy green bonds from Ksh10,000 via mobile apps. The NSE says it will deepen capital markets and promote sustainable investing. The bond’s proceeds fund climate-resilient projects verified by the Climate Bonds Initiative. Trading liquidity is supported by market makers like SBG Securities. The move follows similar listings in Nigeria and South Africa and positions Nairobi as a green finance leader in East Africa.
