Kenya Power is deploying 3 million smart meters nationwide by 2026 to reduce technical and commercial losses from 14% to 10%. The Ksh25 billion program, funded by AfDB and KfW, includes prepaid functionality, remote disconnect, and tamper alerts. Over 500,000 meters have been installed in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, cutting losses by 22% in those areas. Customers can monitor usage via SMS and mobile apps. The utility says the project will improve revenue collection and grid stability, enabling lower tariffs in the long run. Smart meters are also critical for integrating rooftop solar and EV charging into the national grid.
