Govt constructs four ESP markets in Kericho

KERICO, Kenya – The national government, through the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), is spearheading the construction of four state-of-the-art markets in Kericho County, aimed at modernizing trade and boosting local livelihoods. Already underway are the markets at Chesinende in Kipkelion East, Kapkatet in Bureti, and Sosiot in Belgut Sub-Counties, with a fourth at Fort Tenant-Lelu in Kipkelion West set to commence soon. The Sh162 million initiative, managed by Resjos Enterprises Limited under the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, and Urban Development, is expected to provide modern facilities, including cold storage, breastfeeding rooms, accessible walkways, and hygienic washrooms for traders and shoppers.

Kericho County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo explained that the six-month projects, which began in April 2024, are designed to relocate trading from roadside areas into organized spaces, creating safer and more efficient market environments. Each market provides daily employment for around 150 youths and women, with hundreds more benefiting indirectly. The markets also aim to formalize trading practices, reduce congestion along highways, and enhance access to modern facilities for merchants, thereby promoting hygiene, safety, and business growth. The construction aligns with Kenya’s broader urban development goals and supports efforts to empower local communities economically.

Residents and local business leaders have welcomed the development, highlighting the potential for increased commerce and improved standards of living. Moving into these markets will not only protect our goods from weather damage but also attract more customers due to improved facilities, said a Kapkatet trader. County officials indicated that once operational, the ESP markets will set a benchmark for future government-funded infrastructure projects, encouraging further investments in urban modernization and community empowerment. With these markets, Kericho is poised to strengthen its position as a commercial hub in the Rift Valley while creating lasting opportunities for local entrepreneurship.
