County Secures Sh500 Million Investment in tech Sector in Nairobi

by KenyaPolls

Nairobi County has taken a major step toward accelerating its digital transformation agenda after convening a strategic workshop that brought together three key sub-sectors under the Innovation and Digital Economy (IDE) Sector — the Digital Economy and Startups, ICT Infrastructure, and Smart Nairobi. The retreat aimed to align their programs with Governor Johnson Sakaja’s digital manifesto, setting a clear roadmap for technology-driven service delivery and inclusive growth across the capital.
Opening the forum, County Executive Committee Member for Innovation and Digital Economy, Mike Gumo, emphasized professionalism, integrity, and a renewed sense of purpose within the county’s workforce. This workshop is not just a formality. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with our mission and reenergize our commitment to service, he said. His sentiments were echoed by Chief Officer for Digital Economy and Startups, Sande Oyolo, who underscored teamwork and open communication as key to building a purpose-driven sector. We are not operating in silos. Our success depends on collaboration, listening to the ground, and translating experiences into actionable policies, he added.
Other notable contributors included Smart Nairobi Chief Officer, Wilson Gakuya, who urged officers to embrace continuous learning and peer collaboration, and ICT Director Gideon Thande, who reminded participants to anchor all initiatives within the Governor’s vision. Presentations from senior officers — including Director Elizabeth Ndung’u, Truphena Ogonda, and Deputy Director Robert Okiri — detailed the ongoing programs and identified opportunities for greater cross-functional cooperation. Discussions highlighted the importance of fiscal accountability, structured management, and improved staff welfare to enhance performance.
The retreat concluded with resolutions to strengthen internal coordination, address operational challenges, and develop a sustainable roadmap for the county’s innovation agenda. The forum was attended by IDE directors, assistant directors, budget officers, and ICT instructors from Nairobi’s 11 Vocational Training Centres.
The event marked a milestone in Nairobi County’s efforts to position itself as a leader in digital governance and innovation in Kenya. With its renewed commitment to technology-driven service delivery, the county aims to transform Nairobi into a smart city that empowers citizens, supports startups, and fosters inclusive digital growth.
