Kenya accelerates internet penetration efforts nationwide

by KenyaPolls

Kenya is intensifying efforts to expand internet penetration across the country, with significant progress in mobile connectivity, broadband access, and fiber‑optic infrastructure. The government’s digital agenda aims to ensure that every Kenyan has access to affordable, high‑speed internet, positioning the nation as East Africa’s digital hub. These efforts are part of the broader Digital Transformation Strategy, which links connectivity to economic growth, education, and innovation.
In January 2025, DataReportal’s Digital 2025: Kenya report revealed that the country had 68.8 million mobile connections, surpassing its population of 57 million. The report also noted 27.4 million internet users and 15.1 million social media accounts, reflecting Kenya’s youthful and digitally engaged population. This surge in connectivity demonstrates how internet penetration is reshaping communication, commerce, and education nationwide.
By June 2025, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) reported that 4G coverage had reached 97.3% of the population, while 5G penetration expanded to 30%. At the same time, Kenya’s national fiber‑optic network grew to 13,590 km, up from 8,900 km in 2022. The Sh10 billion Fibre Optic Expansion Project (May 2025) was launched to raise coverage from 62% to 90% by the end of the financial year, ensuring that rural and underserved areas benefit from digital access.
Looking ahead, experts believe Kenya’s accelerated internet penetration will boost e‑commerce, fintech, digital learning, and e‑government services. With strong mobile adoption, expanding broadband infrastructure, and supportive government policies, Kenya is well‑positioned to attract foreign investment and foster innovation. The nationwide rollout of internet services signals a strategic move to ensure that the country’s digital future is inclusive, resilient, and globally competitive.
