The Ministry of Health, in partnership with NOCK and KEFRI, unveiled Kenya’s first National Sports Nutrition Guidelines on May 12, 2025—providing evidence-based dietary plans for athletes across disciplines, ages, and income levels. The 120-page manual includes budget-friendly meal plans (e.g., KSh 200/day elite runner diet ), hydration protocols for altitude, and micronutrient guides using indigenous foods like amaranth, spider plant, and baobab. Over 5,000 coaches were trained in rollout workshops. You can’t out-train a poor diet—especially when beans are your protein, said lead nutritionist Dr. Wambui Kariuki. Athletics Kenya made compliance mandatory for national camp selection. FAO endorsed the guidelines for replication across Africa.
