County Launches Nairobi Digital Business Forum

by KenyaPolls

Nairobi County has unveiled the Nairobi Digital Business Forum, a landmark event held on May 12–13, 2025 at the Emara Ole-Sereni Hotel. Organized in collaboration with the European Union Delegation, EU Member States, and Kenyan stakeholders, the forum was themed Digitalising Trade and focused on how technology can drive sustainable investment and inclusive growth. The event attracted high-level participants, including government officials, innovators, and development partners, underscoring Nairobi’s ambition to become a leading digital trade hub in Africa.
The forum builds on Kenya’s growing reputation as a digital economy leader, following the EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) that came into force in July 2024. Discussions centered on leveraging digital platforms to streamline trade processes, improve transparency, and open new markets for Kenyan businesses. Participants highlighted the importance of digital tools in reducing barriers for SMEs, enhancing competitiveness, and aligning with Kenya’s broader economic transformation agenda. The event also showcased Nairobi’s startups and tech innovators, who demonstrated solutions ranging from e-commerce platforms to digital payment systems.
The launch has been widely praised by business leaders and policymakers. Entrepreneurs welcomed the opportunity to connect with international investors, while trade experts noted that the forum strengthens Kenya’s position in global value chains. Environmental and social advocates emphasized that digital trade can also promote sustainability and inclusivity by reducing paperwork, improving efficiency, and creating new opportunities for youth and women-led enterprises. However, stakeholders cautioned that cybersecurity and digital literacy remain critical challenges that must be addressed to ensure equitable participation.
Looking ahead, Nairobi County plans to make the Digital Business Forum an annual event, expanding its scope to include sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and creative industries. Officials believe that by embedding digital solutions into trade and investment, Nairobi can accelerate economic growth, create jobs, and reinforce its role as East Africa’s innovation capital. If sustained, the forum could serve as a model for other counties, showcasing how local governments can harness technology to drive global competitiveness.
