Kisii’s Gusii Wrestling & Conflict Resolution Program Adopted Nationally

by KenyaPolls

After reducing school violence by 61% in 30 Kisii schools, the Gusii Wrestling & Conflict Resolution (GWCR) program was adopted nationally by the Ministry of Education on June 1, 2025. The initiative revives *Egesagura*, a traditional chest-grip wrestling style, but frames matches as controlled conflict —where victory comes not from dominance, but from guiding an opponent to safe ground (*Omonera*). Wrestling teaches you to hold firmly—and let go wisely, said County Executive Zipporah Nyaboke. Trained elders and PE teachers co-facilitate post-match dialogues. Over 200 schools have enrolled; UNESCO documented it for the *Global Citizenship Education* repository. A train-the-trainer academy opens in Kisii Town in January 2026.
