Tana River Launches Mangrove Sprint to Combat Erosion

by KenyaPolls

Tana River County hosted the Mangrove Sprint on June 5, 2025 (World Environment Day)—a 5km run where finishers planted 3 mangrove saplings each. Total: 4,200 trees planted along eroding banks. Every stride roots hope, said winner Evans Mwangi. KWS and KMFRI supported the event. Satellite data shows 82% survival after 3 months. The race is now annual, with Lamu joining in 2026. UNEP cited it as a best practice.
