Kenya Premier League side Zetech University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), and Kenyatta University (KU) stood out at the 12th Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) ball games playoffs.

The tournament concluded on Sunday at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Zetech University claimed their first women’s football title by defeating MMUST 1-0 in a closely contested final. Daisy Kisuya scored the decisive goal, taking advantage of a loose ball after the MMUST goalkeeper mishandled it, enabling her an easy finish.

The victory was particularly impressive as Zetech played with ten players after their goalkeeper received a red card. Team captain Sheril Muyera assumed the role of goalkeeper and delivered a stellar performance to maintain the lead.

“This is our first win after losing last year’s final to KU. When we were reduced to ten players, I took up the goalkeeper position and managed to deliver,” said Muyera.

Zetech will now represent Kenya at the upcoming East Africa University Games in Dodoma, Tanzania.

MMUST confirmed their supremacy in women’s volleyball, securing a fourth consecutive title with a straightforward straight-sets victory over the University of Nairobi (UoN). The Kakamega-based team achieved a 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 triumph in a one-sided final.

Captain Mitchell Okumu attributed their success to teamwork and consistent training.

“We always train together as a team, and during our free time we work on correcting mistakes. That has helped us excel,” she said, expressing confidence ahead of the regional games.
“Dodoma, here we come as champions. We want to succeed not just in Kenya but across East Africa.”

KU dominated the netball competition, winning both the men’s and women’s titles.

The men’s team defeated the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) 45-33 in the final, while the women’s side narrowly beat MMUST 39-34.

Men’s captain Billy Otieno expressed satisfaction to conclude his university career with victory.

“This is my final year, and winning the title means everything. We worked hard as a team and remained undefeated throughout the tournament,” he said.

In handball, MMUST captured the women’s title after defeating Daystar University, while Daystar’s men’s team edged KU 21-19 in a closely contested final.

United States International University Africa (USIU-A) experienced mixed results. Their women’s team secured a 58-53 victory over African Nazarene University, while the men’s side lost 59-47 to Zetech.

In rugby 15s, Maseno University delivered a commanding performance to defeat Moi University 35-13 and secure the title on Saturday, concluding an action-packed weekend of university sports.
