Ngong Road Initiative Equips Nairobi Students with Life Skills Beyond School Walls
Nairobi — The Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) is redefining youth empowerment by ensuring that learning continues long after the school bell rings. During the August break, the organization engaged dozens of high school students in a series of educational and personal development programs designed to strengthen both their academic and life skills. Through its ongoing partnership with Friends of Ngong Road, the foundation focuses on helping children from low-income families unlock opportunities for a brighter future.
The August sessions featured intensive mathematics tutoring to help students improve their academic performance, alongside lessons in personal development and responsible decision-making. One of the most impactful topics was sex education — a subject often neglected in schools — where students were taught about reproductive health, safe practices, and access to contraceptives. Facilitators emphasized the importance of knowledge as a tool for self-awareness and empowerment, ensuring young people are equipped to make informed choices as they transition into adulthood.
As schools reopen, both teachers and mentors at NRCF express confidence that the students will return with renewed focus and responsibility. Our goal is to ensure our learners are not only excelling academically but also growing into well-rounded individuals who make positive contributions to society, said a program coordinator. With initiatives such as the Techmates Program and Karibu Loo employment pathway, the foundation continues to bridge education and economic opportunity for Nairobi’s youth. The success of these August programs underscores the organization’s commitment to nurturing future leaders and breaking the cycle of poverty — one student at a time.
