Youth and junior athletes delivered exceptional performances on Friday at the ASA Age Group Championships in Germiston Stadium, breaking five national records on Day Two.
Tumi Ramokgopa led the charge with a gold medal in the U20 women’s 100m hurdles final, clocking 12.93.
Representing Athletics Gauteng North (AGN), she improved her own South African junior record of 13.15, set in Potchefstroom last September, by 0.22 seconds.
“This is my introduction to the world, and I’m incredibly happy with this achievement,” she expressed.
In the youth girls’ 100m hurdles, Janelle Kirkpatrick claimed victory with a time of 12.96, breaking Megan Nieman’s previous national record of 13.02 set earlier this year.
Megan Maree secured second place in 13.07, completing an AGN podium sweep.
Nieman faced disappointment when a false start in the heats prevented her from competing in the final, though she is expected to perform well in the U18 girls’ 400m hurdles.
Enrique Bosch impressed with his performance in the U18 boys’ 110m hurdles final.
Competing for Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), Bosch finished in 12.92, surpassing Matodzi Ndou’s previous national record of 12.98 by 0.06 seconds.
His time placed him second globally, just 0.05 seconds behind the world youth record held by Sasha Zoya.
“Having this dream come true means everything to me, and I’m grateful for my support system,” Bosch stated.
Christi Loggenberg dominated the U18 girls’ 400m, winning gold in 52.33 to lead another AGN podium sweep.
Her time surpassed Precious Molepo’s previous national youth record of 52.84 from 2022.
“The beginning of my race was strong, and I pushed hard at the finish,” Loggenberg commented.
“It’s unbelievable to have broken the record.”
The day concluded with an outstanding performance from the Boland team in the U18 boys’ 4x100m relay.
The team of Lezario Meyer, Micah Africa, Mitchell Maarman, and Quade Matjan won in 40.71, establishing a new national record and bringing the day of youth athletics to a successful close.
