Kisumu City and Maseno Township are set to benefit from a Sh8.6 billion water expansion project, implemented by the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA).
The Phase II Lot 1 project will extend the city’s water network by 156 km and lay an additional 25 km in Maseno. Four new storage tanks with a combined capacity of 1,450 m³ will be constructed at Obwolo, Bukna, Maseno town, and Maseno market. Existing boreholes will be rehabilitated, and new ones drilled to reinforce supply.
Water CS Eric Mugaa described the initiative as essential due to increasing demand, while Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o called it a game changer for fairer water distribution, especially in informal settlements. The project is financed jointly by the Government of Kenya, French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB), and European Union.
The expansion is part of a three-phase plan, with Phase III set to upgrade Dunga intake works and rehabilitate Nyalenda treatment ponds.
